Prior to moving to the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, I lived in Southern Nevada for 23
years. During that time I spent many fall hunting
seasons in Northern Nevada hunting the Mule deer of that state. It was
during those trips that I found the need to treat my boots in order to
keep my feet dry from the snow. I also learned that the desert heat and
sands were not friendly to leather. I tried several brands of leather
treatment and finally decided that there was one in particular that
worked better than the others.
Upon moving to Southwest
Colorado I found that snow and rains were more frequent than in
Southern Nevada. It was August in the year that I moved to Montezuma
County. It started to rain and I don’t think it stopped until
Thanksgiving. That is probably an exaggeration but I’m close. I wanted
to wear my leather boots but I couldn’t find the brand of leather
treatment that I was used to. That next year I started working on
creating my own product. I started with some formulas that I found in
various books and spent a great deal of time creating a bunch of junk.
I took the time to analyze the various ingredients and started
narrowing them down to a manageable number as well as recognizing which
ones were working and which ones were mere fluff. Even when I selected
the ingredients I wanted to work with, I created many batches of
failures. The first ones I made were so hard you couldn’t even stick
your finger in it to try to apply it. So trial and error produced
today’s Colorado Boot Grease.
I started sharing CBG with friends. I listened to their comments: "Too
hard"; "Too goopy"; "Too stinky", and more. I first marketed CBG
through farm Feed & Grain stores and the rest, as they say, is
history.
